Burroughs_B6700_System_c1974.jpgWork - my first computer system114 viewsThe Burroughs B6700 was only one of the several big-iron mainframes built in the 1960s and 1970s. Most had a lifetime of 10-15 years, and all were extremely unreliable with a Mean Time Between Failures of only 2-3 days. IBM's 360 range was no exception. These machines were for engineers, not customers! They were enjoyable to work on, once we knew what and how! In the 1980s MTBF improved to 12-14 days, in the 1990s we began to forget how to fix them. In the 2000s we weren't allowed in the computer rooms!Avenger

Burroughs_B7700_System_c1977.jpgWork - my second system90 viewsThis was Burroughs' last processor before the merger with Sperry-Univac to become Unisys. Bordering on scientific, about 15 MIPS, extremely fast floating-point ops, first with prefetch and translation lookaside buffers. But no match for a Cray-1b at 80 MIPS. Training on this processor was 3 months in the US, after which we were all experts. Good old days.Avenger

IBM_360_System_c1970.jpgIBM's faithful 360, still around in 1981, over 10 years old by then86 viewsThis was a processor I worked on briefly, at the end of its life. It was replaced by the IBM 370 range, which was a family of several models that I worked on for several years throughout Europe. Amdahl took a large prtion of IBM's market in the 1980s, and I worked on Amdahl 470/V7 and 470/V8 processors in parallel with IBM 370, IBM 3080 and IBM 3090 processors. It was a good time for those of us who like working on "real" computers, that "talked" to us!Avenger
